Why the Cowboys battle with the Eagles is not a must win game
Tim Cowlishaw, sports columnist for How much of a must win game is the Eagles game for the Cowboys on Sunday? SportsDayDFW.comWhy haven't the Cowboys been able to get pressure on the quarterback? and The Dallas Morning News, author of Drunk on Sports and panelist on ESPN's "Around the Horn," answered questions about the Cowboys in his weekly reader mailbag. Here are some highlights: What is the key on offense to the Cowboys having success vs. the Eagles?
Tim Cowlishaw: It's not. It's a fun game and a big game given that first place is at stake. But remember that the loser, while 3-4, is a game out of first place behind a team that's not playing very well. No matter which way it goes this is true. Philly has holes in its defense and the Cowboys aren't exactly a scary team to chase down if the Eagles lose. So it's going to be an up and down year for both teams and one of them will win the division and try to be hot at the right time. But this is a long way from a must win.Can Michael Gallup step up and be a WR1 if Amari Cooper is unable to go?
Cowlishaw: Some of it's credit to the opponents. Sam Darnold got rid of the ball quick. He played like a man who didn't want to take a shot to the spleen, if you know what I mean, and he was very efficient. Statistics show DeMarcus Lawrence doesn't get double-teamed any more than Robert Quinn, and Quinn has been the better player. They get no push from the tackles at all. They don't blitz much (which was a mistake Sunday against the Jets). It's a serious deficiency.
Cowlishaw: You would think it's attacking the holes in the secondary but I will ride with Zeke. The Eagles most of the time have had good run defenses in recent years and it's true statistically again this year. Yet Elliott is 4-0 against the Eagles and averages more than 100 yards on the ground per game. Get that rolling early, and the passing attack can do whatever it wants, even if it's limited without Amari Cooper.
Cowlishaw: He is going to have to be although realistically we're back to last year when the Cowboys' Stephen Jones was saying "Most teams don't have a No. 1." Gallup didn't have a good game at all Sunday when the Cowboys needed him to show up big. He's going against some very average cornerbacks Sunday night. Big night for the second-year player who, before the injury, was looking like the best No. 2 WR the Cowboys have had in years.
New Orleans - The Saints may not have gotten into the endzone Sunday night, but they still walked away with the 12-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys in a defensive battle at the Mercedes-Benz
What to Know The Eagles, on a short week, decimated by injuries, beat Aaron Rodgers and the Packers 34-27 to even their record at 2-2. A tremendous running attack, some brilliant late defense and typical efficiency
