Marilyn Manson Releases Cinematic Video for 'God's Gonna Cut You Down'
Marilyn Manson has just released a new video for his rendition of "God's Gonna Cut You Down." The cinematic clip is filled with guns and religious imagery, shot beautifully in the desert.
The traditional folk song has been recorded by various legends over the years, including Elvis Presley under the title "Run On" and Bobbie Gentry as "Sermon." Johnny Cash, however, popularized the track into the public zeitgeist, recording "God's Gonna Cut You Down" in 2003. It was posthumously released in 2006 to mass acclaim.
Manson recorded "God's Gonna Cut You Down" for the 24 Hours to Live soundtrack, which came out in 2017. "I enjoyed doing it. I did it in one take and everyone thinks that Johnny Cash wrote it and I looked up the people that covered it and it was great because it's Elvis, Tom Jones... It's originally just some soul singer back in I don't even know what era," Manson told Loudwire in 2017. "The chords that Tyler [Bates] played, it was slightly similar to the version that we're most familiar with, the one that Tom Jones and Johnny Cash did, most notably."
Manson's video for the cut was filmed in Joshua Tree and entirely in black and white. His iconic artistry fills all three minutes, proving once again why the music video format ain't dead. Longtime Manson fans may feel nostalgic for the "Man That Your Fear" video, but "God's Gonna Cut You Down" is peak modern Manson.
