Memphis Grizzlies rookies Ja Morant, Brandon Clarke showing early connection
The Grizzlies dropped their preseason finale 104-91 at San Antonio on Friday night.
But on a night when the team made just 7-of-35 shots from 3-point range, the Grizzlies' two first-round draft picks provided something to be excited about.
No. 21 overall pick Brandon Clarke notched his second double-double in a row, and No. 2 overall pick Ja Morant assisted on all four Clarke's baskets.
Their first connection came in the first quarter when Morant knifed into the lane and dropped a left-handed pass behind his back to Clarke for a dunk.
Morant finished with 16 points, 6 assists in 5 rebounds in 25 minutes.
The game served as a final dress rehearsal before Wednesday night's season opener at Miami.
It's unclear if Clarke will be a starter against the Heat. Center Jonas Valanciunas is recuperating from a sore foot and could replace Clarke in the opening night lineup.
But even if Valanciunas displaces Clarke, first-year coach Taylor Jenkins may want to explore ways to get Morant and Clarke extended time on the floor together.
Morant found Clarke rolling to the rim for a pair of lay-ups in the second quarter before they connected for a final time in the fourth quarter.
Morant also assisted on two of Clarke's baskets in Monday's loss to Charlotte, and Clarke assisted on two of Morant's baskets in that game as well.
Clarke finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds on Friday night.Reach Grizzlies beat writer David Cobb at [email protected] or on Twitter @DavidWCobb. LIMITED TIME OFFERS: Get full access to the Commercial Appeal
