An Asteroid Capable Of Carrying Two 'Titanics' On It's Back Might Strike Pass By Earth, Major Consequences Predicted
The asteroid, named 2013 MD8, is anticipated to sail past Earth which is just over 3 million miles away, or approximately 13 times the distance between Earth and the moon, at 12:55 pm (ET) on Tuesday.
This enormous space rock is expected to get a close approach to Earth but the trajectory should see it fly safely.
NASA analyzes an asteroid to be hazardous on our earth if the asteroid comes within 4,600,000 miles of our planet earth.
The asteroid MD8 comes within the category of a 'near-earth object' (NEO) which NASA defines as all asteroids and comets that orbit within 30 million miles of Earth.
NASA follows this and other near-Earth objects (NEOs) to keep track of any potential incoming threats from the space.
Though, there is no need to be worried about, even with MD8 being a NEO.
Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory explicated that no human in the past 1000 years is identified to have been killed by a meteorite or by the effects of one impact from the space.
NASA analyzes that no asteroid or comet currently on a collision course with our Earth and the probability of a major collision is quite small.
We can say no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years to come as they continued.
The agency says that there are roughly 16,000 are NEOs out of more than 600,000 known asteroids in our solar system.
The MD8 also falls under the category of a potentially hazardous object which are those asteroids that reach a minimum distance less than .05 au from Earth and have an absolute magnitude (H) of 22.0 or brighter. And the asteroid 2013 MD8 has an absolute magnitude of 24.2.
Nasa would not be capable to divert an asteroid if it were moving towards Earth but it could mitigate the impact and would protect lives and property which include evacuating the impact area and relocating important infrastructure.
According to the orbit trajectory, size, shape, mass, composition and rotational dynamics would aid experts in estimating the severity of a potential impact.
But the key to mitigating damage is to figure out any potential threat as early as possible.
Nasa is currently driving ahead with a refrigerator-sized spacecraft capable of intercepting asteroids from colliding with Earth. This test is planned in an unthreatening asteroid in 2024.
